Images of the Volvo EM90 electric MPV were posted online by the Chinese government nearly a month before its official debut.
Homologation certification images released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reveal the luxury hauler’s exterior in its entirety for the first time, a month after Volvo released a top-down preview.
As previously hypothesized, the relationship between the EM90 and Zeekr’s 009 MPV is evident: the EM90’s upright two-box silhouette is nearly identical to the 009, and preliminary technical specifications indicate that it is only 3mm shorter and 11mm lower than the 009.
It is, however, distinguished by its ‘Thor’s hammer’ headlights – a Volvo trademark that aligns it with the new Volvo EX30 and Volvo EX90 – and a minimalist, semi-solid grille panel that is significantly more understated than the 009’s extensive chrome ornamentation. Customized wheel designs and redesigned taillights complete the transformation.
According to the latest information, the dimensions of the EM90 are 5206mm in length, 2024mm in width, and 1859mm in height, making it slightly larger than the identically positioned Lexus LM and nearly identical to the Mercedes-Benz EQV. The variant described in the filing tops the scales at 2,763 kilograms.
This EM90 is rear-driven and powered by a single engine generating 268 horsepower, although Volvo will undoubtedly also offer the four-wheel-drive system used by the top-tier 009. No battery specifications are provided, but the 009 is available with a massive 140kWh battery rated for a 511-mile range according to China’s CLTC testing cycle.
Interior photographs have not yet surfaced. The EM90 is rumored to offer the atmosphere of a “Scandinavian living room on the move,” so it is anticipated to follow in the footsteps of the new Volvo EX30 and Volvo EX90 SUVs in adopting a minimalist but materially rich and technology-laden cabin that emphasizes space, comfort, and connectivity.
Volvo provided no categorical hints, but stated, “The new EM90 does more than enable you to travel from point A to point B. It provides space for your life.”
The Swedish company added, “Imagine a mobile space where you can simply be yourself. A place to communicate with loved ones, create, relax, work, or simply reflect.”
Notably, the 009 was designed in Volvo’s birthplace of Gothenburg, Sweden, at Geely’s new global design centre, led by ex-Bentley design chief Stefan Sielaff. It has not been verified whether the EM90 was designed concurrently.
The EM90 will be the first MPV to bear the Volvo badge, and it will be the first non-SUV model introduced by the brand since the 2019 debut of the S60 sedan.
Volvo recently made headlines in the United Kingdom when it discontinued the sale of all saloon and estate cars, citing much higher demand for its crossovers and SUVs. As a consequence, it is extremely unlikely that the EM90 will come to the United Kingdom.
