Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator Hybrids Have Been Canceled; a Redesign Is Coming

The Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, both three-row midsize SUVs from the Blue Oval, are receiving several updates. Ford and Lincoln spokespeople verified to C/D that the hybrid versions of both models will be discontinued for the 2024 model year. Soon, we anticipate hearing about updated 2025 Explorer and Aviator models, and we’ve already observed the Ford’s new design (pictured) without camouflage.

Non plus hybrides
Previously, the Explorer offered a hybrid drivetrain with a 3.3-liter V-6, while the Aviator Grand Touring featured a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 and a 21-mile EPA-rated electric range. In 2024, neither hybrid will be available. Ford discontinued the Explorer hybrid due to high demand for the hybrid version of the Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility, as well as demand for other Ford hybrids. Lincoln did not provide a specific reason for the Aviator’s discontinuation, but it is manufactured in the same Chicago facility as the Explorer, so it is likely that the two are related.
