The Toyota EPU Concept Appears Production-Ready as an Electric Pickup

Due to this new concept known as the EPU, which we assume stands for electric pickup, the ongoing discussion about a forthcoming Toyota electric vehicle is gaining momentum. The EPU is a four-door crew cab pickup that will be displayed at the Tokyo auto show and is significantly shorter than the Tacoma at 199.6 inches in length. Its unibody construction suggests it could compete with vehicles like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

We presume that this vehicle will ride on a new electric platform, though Toyota has not yet provided specifics. Its wheelbase measures 131.9 inches, which places it between the short- and long-bed configurations of the outgoing Tacoma and is substantially longer than the Maverick’s. As the rear suspension is mounted further back than is typical for a compact pickup, this explains the truck’s slightly unusual proportions.

This EPU’s exterior design is remarkably devoid of odd concept details, giving it a production-ready appearance. The interior is somewhat more futuristic, with large display screens, a minimalist dashboard, and a steering wheel in the manner of a yoke.

This concept differs considerably from the previous concept for a midsize electric truck that Toyota revealed a few years ago. This model resembled the new 2024 Tacoma more, suggesting that Toyota may be planning multiple electric vehicles. We cannot confirm that both will enter the U.S. market, but we would not be astonished if they did. Toyota will display the EPU concept at the Tokyo auto show the following week, so look for more information shortly.
